Art snobs

Sat May 9, 2009, 2:20 PM
So someone in my film class said that if something is extremely popular, it isn't really art. Needless to say an argument ensued between him and myself. How the hell can you say that art isn't art if it's popular? Wouldn't that mean that every Picasso painting isn't art? Or that Michelangelo's David isn't art? This is quite possibly one of the most moronic statements I have ever heard in my life.

In this same vein, I'm sick of people hating on video games and cartoons as art. I am a cartoonist, I like drawing cartoons, and I KNOW that cartoons are just as amazing as a fine artists paintings. I don't care what anyone says, things like Penny Arcade and Halo are incredible works of art in their own right, their perceived simplicity is just an ignorant view of their brilliance. I would much rather watch an episode of Billy & Mandy than stare at almost any piece of modern art. This is perceived as being "simple minded" or some other bullshit. No, I do not enjoy cartoons because I am stupid, I enjoy them because they are FUN. In fact, there are quite a few people who I have met that have a snobby view of cartoons that I know for a fact have the IQ of a fucking sweat sock. I'm sick of being looked down at for being a "simple cartoonist" in a school full of art snobs. Strike that, a WORLD full of art snobs. Fuck you, step down from your god dammed high horse and shut your pretentious mouths.

I'd like to point out that I am not saying that other artistic disciplines aren't beautiful, I'm just saying that they should be judged on the same artistic plane as cartoons and comic books. When I like something, I like it regardless of it being fine art, photography, or whatever it is.

Sorry, I had to vent, people annoy the piss out of me.
